Nature Conservation
Through residential field study centres and our site-based projects we carry out ecological monitoring and research in areas of high value for wildlife.
Community-based Conservation
A Rocha is active in community-based practical conservation projects around the world. We are focused on resolving issues that threaten ecosystems and the diversity of their flora and fauna.
Some projects are small-scale and led by volunteers; others are bigger-budget programmes involving whole communities dependent on the health of local forests and wetlands.
Some examples of our work:
Through the A Rocha Marine Programme we
- study, protect and restore marine habitats and biodiversity,
- raise awareness of marine pollution, with tools like our Plastic Toolbox
- develop resources and build capacity in support of coastal areas
Through the A Rocha African Forest Programme we campaigning to combat deforestation, particularly in Atewa, Ghana and the Dakatcha Woodlands, Kenya
Life on Land Conservation
We work towards the Sustainable Development Goal 15 for Life on Land:
- In Canada, restoring the Little Campbell river catchment
- In the Czech Republic, volunteer bird-ringing
- In France, conservation of the European Roller
- In the UK, protecting dragonflies and damselflies in Foxearth Meadows Nature Reserve
- In Switzerland, dry meadows and grasslands biodiversity surveys
- In Netherlands, creating breeding floats on wet meadows
- In Australia, invasive plant removal
In New Zealand/Aotearoa, community conservation for protection of the Oi bird, Karioi
In Peru, expanding conservation of dry forests
Community projects
We work towards the Sustainable Development Goal 11 for Sustainable Communities:
- In India, finding solutions for humans and elephants in conflicted spaces
- In Lebanon, creating urban green space in the Bekaa Valley
- In Kenya, supporting schooling and sustainable livelihoods through the ASSETS programme
- Undertaking environmental education and engaging with churches and theology
